So its that time of the life for me now. I need to renew my student visa. Here is my story.
I applied for the student visa back on 2006. I got it in one shot and the interview process was very smooth as I was a good student. But now my GPA is low. So I guess that eventually make me bad student or maybe not. I am going to Nepal this December to renew my student visa.
Points to note:
I started with Biomedic then switched to Electric Eng and ended up in Computer Science. It will take me 8 years and 1 term to complete my BS. I will graduate with CS Degree March/2014 My Current GPA: 2.26 but projected GPA when I complete is 2.63. I was never out of status and FULL TIME throughout these years. I travelled back to Nepal on 2008 while my visa was still valid I am actively meeting with my advisers form past 3 years. Its a very active interaction for which I am getting a letter of recommendation from them why I should get Student Visa again. I am getting about 3 letter of recommendation why I should get a VISA.
I want to know what are your thoughts and how has your experiences been during the interview recently. I need some key points to convince the counselor why I should be given visa etcs..
Let me know if you need other details but your personal experiences and thoughts will be helpful.

I also came to know they as SSN when renewing the visa...
Why could that be?
I have never worked outside with SSN... but is there any other reason why they would as that?

I have not been thru all the posts in this thread, but I am wondering why do not people go to MX to get their renewed. Here is my story:
I got my renewed in March 2008 with my visa had already been expired for over a year. I had just transferred to 4 yr university from Community college (it was my 2nd semester there). My accumulated GPA @ university was 3.8 for the first semester after I transferred. My cumulative GPA at Comm college was 3.26. The document preparation process is exactly the same as we do in KTM the first time. It took me 3 days for the entire process to get the visa. Your are guided by the consultancy (as ones we have in KTM). These guys get you 3-day visa for MX. You get to Brownsville, TX a day head of the interview (once you send your documents, they will get your interview date and you prepare accordingly).
On the interview date they come to the hotel lobby ( usually Holiday inn @ Brownsville). They brief about the interview process and then they take you to MX. Before you get to MX you get your visa and you straightly head to the embassy. After the bio-metric process you wait for your turn. After about an hour's wait they called my name. The questions they asked:
Do you not go the same university where you initially applied at Ktm embassy? What are you studying ? Good luck and come to pick up your PP after 2 hours.
I paid a fee (about $200 if I remember correctly). Walked thru PoE; but where again bio-metric process; took little longer where (no problems though, about an hour). Flew back to Dallas. Cost about $1,000 including everything, I mean about $1000 period.
Keep in mind, of about 25 total applicants 24 were Indian for H1B stamping. I was the only one for F1 stamp. All those 24 got approved, but 2 or 3 had to stay a day or 2 more for additional investigation. Everybody got their visa though. I got visa for 5 years, but my friend after a yr got visa for a year ( as long as his status for valid for). Now again I am hearing they are stamping fro 5 yrs, I don't know.
I had no doubt (anywhere in my mind and heart that I will be declined so I never even had 2nd thought). I was an average student and kahile pani samajik maa kaam gareko thiena.
You guys are all applying for PhD program . You all should have no problem. Good Luck.
Get visa here and fly to Nepal.
www.mexico-assistance.com is the consultancy's website. Good luck again

Bro,
I had all my transcripts plus recommendations from my profs. ( just to have your points strong). Include only the transcripts and diplomas that will plus you ( meaning don't put the transcripts of Comm Coll. that you did in interim--include only diplomas). As long as you clear DHS background check (mainly criminal background) and if you are a student of good standing, you should be okay. By the way url doesn't work.
hopefully these are the same guys. Good luck.

I got my visa renewed from Kathmandu in May 2013. My visa and I-20 expired in June 2012 but I had my I-20 extended till December 2013. I am a PhD student. And I had the followding documents:
Transcript, A letter from the department saying I am yet to finish my required credits towards my PhD, Renewed I-20, Transcripts of my PhD program, and other supplimentary documents about relationships and finance etc. Renewal was easy.
For renewal application, I filled up the DS160 (?) form I asked my friend to go to Nabil bank and get the receipt and and interview date. Typically, you get the interview date after a week of submitting the form and fees. I reached KTM 2 days before my visa interview and they gave passport back in 2 days after the interview.
Before that I wanted to go to Canada and renew my visa. I also got visa for Canada and an interview date. But I decided to go to KTM cause I thought with the money and time I go to Canada ( travel, hotel, uncertainities) I might as well go home.
Good luck guys!

devo, I'm not quite sure if the questions asked to Parbatekanchhi are relevant to you. With all due respect, the scenarios aren't quite comparable. I mean, she's enrolled in a PhD program w/ an assistantship (most likely). On the other hand, you've been working towards your Bachelor's degree for the past 8 years. You'll need to come up w/ a resounding proof before your visa gets renewed. That could be anything. If you're set to inherit a fortune as your parents' only child, that might suffice. If I were you, I'd try to apply it via Mexico or Canada. If not, I'd wait till enrolling in a Master's Program. But then, since you're set to graduate in March, they might not care all that much.

I dont have any personal experience on visa. But after going through your lines i came to know that you are not a bad person as you have said you became bad eventually. As we all know that visa depends on our fate. Lets see what happens to you .. All the best
