Although I’m not a Newar, I was on this convention couple of years back when it was held at VA. I don’t see it as a racist organization but it was organized badly. We had to pay $20 each for the convention that included dinner along with local home made newari liquor. When our turn came for dinner they ran out of almost everything and the local newari liquor they promised turned out to be vodka. Beside it the place itself was really messy. Hopefully they will do better this time.

I am not against any organizations or their events. But just a spare of thought to all these "mushrooming" organizations. Until perhaps a decade ago, we had just one organization - ANA, that used to or attempted to cater the needs of Nepalese living in America. It's quite understandable that the number of incoming Nepalese is increasing each year but does that necessarily evokes the need for more than one organizations based on regions, ethnicities etc? Are we that big in number that we cannot be confined and yet be represented individually in one single group? Are we that divided?

Frankly speaking, and this is not to demoralize the honest and painstaking efforts from some of these organizations to help the needy Nepalese, I don't see the need of this many of them. We have this tendency to establish a group of so called "like minded" people in literally each and every field back in Nepal but unfortunately, only some of them have done genuine service for their cause. Just to introspect, shall we ask, are we not following the same inefficient "pattern" here in US and elsewhere abroad? In spite of quality education and international exposure, are we really moving ahead?

Godzilla,
I am not against ethnic groups having their own gatherings. If ANA was a competent organization, it would have sufice. But all ANA does nothing but organize a gathering for drunks every year. If they had tend to sensitive issue of different groups this would not have happened.
Another good example is the TAMU SAMAAJ OF BOSTON. They are doing a lot more to Nepali folks than the Ol GBNC. By that I don't mena just Tamu people... but all NEpal people. Be its cultural functions, supporting needy in all aspects like socially, economically, and emotional. Recenlt they joined hands with Sajha.com and Nepali Musicians to raise funds for two cancer patients who did not have insurance.
MY POINT IS I DONT CARE WHAT LABEL THE ORGANIZATION BEARS.......IF THEY ARE HELPING NEPALI PEOPLE IN ANY WAY ..... END OF STORY.

That's the pity BathroomCoffee! One is never suffice for us all. I am not speaking against Newah Organization in particular or Tamu Samaj or any other organization for that matter. I am against the concept of keeping numerous organizations for a handful number of people. We are a small country, yet we have number of political parties. Agreed we have variations but that does not mean we have to have one group for each difference/variation. Are we really united? That's my concern.

Yep, I did. The program was a nice arrangement. Following is my evaluation of the program.

FOOD: Samaye Bajee was excellent combination of typical cultural foods. Chhoyelaa -- hmmmm -- my mouth waters even now, so tasty. Bara was the next best in the Samaye Bajee. Rest items of the Samaye Bajee were also far good in taste and combination. Missing was the Ailaa.
The dinner was also very tasty. Aalu-tama, Khasiko masu, Saag were the best I liked. Some were little too hot, I was not able to figure out, what was actually hot, but I noticed I was sweating a bit due to hot taste in the end of dinner. The deserts were fine too. Foods were plenty in supply, well managed to serve everybody, no-complain from anybody I heard there. I saw everybody quite happy.
The only trouble was seen during coffee break as the hot water was running out too frequent. Score: 9.9 out of 10 for the food

PROGRAM: Inaugural session was fine. All speakers were time conscious but they took little more time than they should. Speeches were balanced and appealing to audience. Participants were little too few but that is not the problem of organizers. People want less BHASAN which is understandable. The program was a little longer than planned but it did not make people bored. Score 8.5 out of 10 for the inaugural session

Cultural session: Discussion part: It was started late than scheduled. There was a time constraint to finish this program by 6:00 PM as the participant from Nepal had to catch their bus for return trip. Moderator seemed a bit nervous but he managed the program run smooth. Speakers were time conscious and were speaking within the boundary of given topics. The program did not get time for open floor discussion, so the excited audience hearing the thoughts of panelists did not get opportunity to speak out. Some of them seemed a bit frustrated too. Score 6.0 out of 10 for the discussion session

Entertainment part: Due to squeeze of discussion session, the entertainment session was started in time. The musical arrangement, sound system and instruments were excellent. No background echo in the hall, no recursive noise, no ear-buzzing teet-taaats. The program announcers did excellent job. No unnecessary delays in the episode. The program was having excellent combination of songs, dances and performance. Everybody did very good job there. Participants of the song and dance competition were performing above the expectation of audience. The audience were voting the performers judging on their performance. Due to their excellent performance, the audience were having trouble to decide which one to vote. I saw people voting many of them, crossing out and again voting to a different one, discussing and debating which one has performed better in the hall. The hall was totally packed and all of the audience did not get chairs to sit.
Score 9.99 out of 10 for the entertainment session.

OVERALL: The program was really very nice one, well-managed, balanced and a perfect combination of good food, entertainment and opportunity to share ideas and make new friends. I understand such a nice program would not be possible without hard effort of the organizers and their well-wishers. I appreciate their effort. I wish to attend similar programs more frequent if possible.
