Go to walmart moneygram, or western union and send money on your parents name,, then when you arrive in nepal you can get it.,

Dude, if you r talkin' about carrying thousands; why don't u just wire transfer the money? It costs around 50 bucks with most banks. If its a small amount then its not worth it however its its a reasonable amount of money like 8k or more then its worth it to spend 50 bucks to wire transfer the money rather than carrying it around.

If it's $2000 or less, take cash (or traveller's cheque, some banks provide for free).

If the amount is over $2K, I suggest do bank transfer.  From my experience, it costs around $30 on States side and few hundred rupees on Nepal side.

I have never used Western Union, but I imagine it is costly.

Taking wads of cash can be risky.  Plus, if the chutiya bhukhmari customs in Nepal find out, they will make you pay through nose - on bribes or otherwise.  They are legally obligated to let you pass with $2K or less, as it is stated on the wall at Tribhuvan International Airport.

I didn't take any money. Used the ATM's in Nepal to take out money. Limit was NPR 50,000  a day I think. NIBL had no charges for the transfer - and the exchange rate was better than what the Thamel currency traders would have given me.

Wouldn't withdrawing cash from ATM in Nepal with your US debit/credit card incur significant bank fees in the form of overseas transaction cost?

Let me know if you wish to transfer it to NABIL Bank. I could even help you set up an account. We offer reasonably cheaper options of remittance.

It would cost 3% of amount withdrawn from ATM in Nepal as foreign ransaction fee in addition to the ATM fee. I heard capitalone bank and paypal debit card has cheaper options.
