My univeristy had to return some money ( lot for me). They mailed the check to my old address. Univeristy says they cant issue the check before 10 days. My name is mentioned in the check. Now I dont know anybody living in the old address. I am afraid that the perosn who gets this will cash it. Is it possible that someone else will cash the check.. I am very troubled.

yes and no.. you can cash it.. but it is the responsibility of the depositing bank to make sure that the $$ is deposited to the desired person even if the name is different on the check... you should check with your school's accouting dept, and find if it is returned or deposited. if it is then, then they'll know what bank, then it is the bank's tauko dukhai to find who deposited.. the bank is liable to return the $$ to you, if it was in your name.

No need to worry. No one can cash your check unless the person has the same name as yours. If the name on the check is Ram Bahadur any Ram Bahadur can deposit the check other than that it is not possible to deposit check on another person's name. You can also ask your school to put a stop payment on the check. It will take time but no need to worry you will get your check. Did you do change of address form in your local post office? If you did than your mail will automatically be forwarded to the new address. -Shiv

As Shiv said only other person who can cash your check is the person with the same name as yours. Which is not a big problem since the bank does check for two forms of ID and does record your lisence number and stuff there is no need to worry just a few minor headache and few daytime minutes of your cell phone .
