Hello sajha users,
As known, we have to replace hand-written passport with MRP by Nov 2015. My passport is valid till June 2015. I plan to visit Nepal before june and get MRP passport while I am there (I've heard there they have expedited process if you are willing to pay the fees which is twice as much if you want in normal duration) rather than getting MRP from DC which I've heard at times could be pain. I know US has six month passport validity rule entering but do any of you know if it is the same while you exit US (My feeling is it should not matter since you are going to your home country but wanted to know if anyone have any information regarding this).
Thanks,
SK

You need to apply for your passport right away.

If you didn't receive your passport 3 weeks prior to your scheduled departure, apply for a travel document.

Most countries won't allow entry under 6 month validity rule. In fact, I believe your airline won't allow you to board your flight either.

I don't think six months validity rule applies while you travel back to your own country. (Not an authenitc info though). You can apply for MRP here and at the same time apply for temporary passport at 20 US $ extra. In case, you don't get MRp on time, you will have passport to do whatever you wanna do.

Passport validity rule of 6 months (3 months in limited countries) are enforced by countries for visitors (travelers/tourists) to minimize overstaying in a foreign country beyond passport validity. Typical tourist/visit visas have 6 months validity so they want to ensure that Passport are still valid when people return back. Airlines do not let passenger board their plane with passport expiring within 6 months because if the immigration of the other country does not allow the person to enter that country because of passport expiry issues, the airlines get fined and the airlines have to bring back that person to the originating country at their own cost. This is applicable to people going to a foreign country not to own home country.
Airlines follow the rules set by country the person is going to. If Nepal has that rule that any person with Nepalese Passport (any Nepalese) should have 6 months validity before entering Nepal, then airlines will definitely not let you board. This scenario is very unlikely.

I thought the information would be useful for future. I successfully manage to return back to US using A/P card. So from my experience you do not need six month validity to travel to your home country but do need a valid passport. Turkish airlines was fine given the ticket price, their food and wine were fine as well (everybody could use little more space though). Lastly, I did not have any trouble traveling with A/P card in TIA or Istanbul, though officer at TIA mistook it for green card and was wondering why it was white rather than green (but I never bothered to explain to him and played around his ignorance).
Thank you all for
