I dont think that advocating for Nepal to be a Hindu state is being "a fundamentalist" nor asking for a cow not be killed! It is easy to point to our social issues and blame it on religion. It is easy to say that we are poor because of our religion, I have heard that zillions of times. It is hard to acknowledge that we are one of the poorest nations with richest culture; it is even harder to understand and appreciate the culture of the poorest nation that we are part of!

If you are Hindu extrimist and want it to remain Hindu State again, I think you all are either foolish or you don't understand the value of secularism.

SHIW, "It is easy to point to our social issues and blame it on religion". Well then you missed the point. Tell me 1 society with no religion, anywhere in the world. "It is easy to say that we are poor because of our religion". We're not blaming any religion, nobody is better than the other. It's when one rules under its name. "It is hard to acknowledge that we are one of the poorest nations with richest culture" Come on now, everbody has their culture from Asia to Africa in many different ways. But what are our culture worth in the real world to even make common sense? I don't think we have many. It's all based on myth & legends. That might be OK with us, but for the rest of the world and people with common sense, it's just a feel good story, good guy Vs bad guy with not a single proof of existence of god, Mahadev, Shiva(like you), Bramha, Garud, Ganesh, Krishna, Kali etc etc.

VOHOTEE , THATS WHAT WE ARE. THATS OUR CULTURE . WE DON'T HAVE CULTURE TO IMPRESS REST OF THE WORLD.AND BTW WHAT OTHER CULTURES HAVE ?IF U HAVE SO MUCH KNOWLEDGE BASED ON WORLD CULTURE CAN U PLEASE GIVES US SOME INSIGHTS OUT HERE .I HAVE SOME KNOWLEDGE ABOUT OTHER CULURES TOO MAY BE NOT MUCH AS YOU.ALL HINDU MYTHS AND LEGENDS ARE CRAP RIGHT??. I GUESS THERE ARE OTHER BETTER CULTURE. AS FOR ME I INTERPRET MY CULTURAL MYTHS .IN DIFFERENT WAY:EX" WE SHOULD NOT EAT COW"- U KNOW WHY I DON'T THINK IT IS JUST BEEN THERE .IT HAS MEANING TO IT WHEN IT CAME TO EXISTENCE. 1] SINCE WE COME FROM AGRICULTURE DEPENEDENT CULTURE- KILLING COW WOULD NOT MAKE SENSE BECAUSE IT GIVES MILK AND FEMALE SPECIES GIVES BIRTH INORDER TO INCREASE HERD 2] OUR FOREFATHER AND VEDAS ARE FAR ADVANCE THEN. MAY BE MAD COW DIEASES HAD SOME INDICATION BACK THEN 3]U DRINK MILK FROM COW WOULD U KILL U R MOTHER AS U DRINK MILK FROM HER? SO INTERPRETATION AND MODERNIZING IS DIFFERENT THING AND SAYING FLAT OUR CULTURE HAD NO SIGNIFICANCE IS PLAIN INGORANCE.I CAN GIVE U MORE EXAMPLE IF U WANT..EVEN GOD AND GODESS LEGENDS CAN BE INTERPRETED IN DIFFERENT WAY .IT IS JUST NOT FEEL GOOD STORIES.

I dont think labeling "fundamentalist" to my feelings and the feeling of others are going to solve the introduced problem. It will not solve the problem by keeping your head inside the sand, may be it will for you? Nepal had the laws against discrimination and against chucha-chut, secularism is not against that, secularism in Nepal is the freedom to kill cows, nothing more. I am against it and will be. I have nothing to say about "your" own culture if you demean it, you do not understand it or fail to understand it. Of course each and every culture has its own history and culture. There are many who understand and treasure our own culture and there are many who dont. The timing on declaring the secular state is fishy, very fishy. I agree now the SPAs are above the constitution, Prachanda(s) are above the constitution as well.

Killing one person or another is not a real solution. When one person is killed another one of his followers with equal or even worst values take over. However I do agree that the demise of Prachanda, Baburam and few of their cadres will bring end to the maoabdi influence.

ImI, I live outside of Nepal and was only giving my personal opinion. I'm not affiliated with any party, king or maoist, doesn't have any realtive working for them either. Frankly I'm not well informed with current situations in Nepal except for few glimpses on yahoo. All I was doing was writing what I belived and seen in other culture. And no, I do not consider myself smarter than you. If my comment offended you, than I apologize. The more I write, the more I waste time and I have a regular job. It seems that people from every corner of political connections are coming here in Sajha and bombarding their messages and if I keep on writing, some will definetly think of me as one too (typical nepali attitude). My last say: When we have already achieved at least on writing for a neautral country, PEACEFULLY with no KILLING. Then you're not happy. That's Nepal and Nepali anyway. Please go back to bring back the "Hindu state " with protest, destruction of public property, life and blood shed. If that makes you happy, then so be it. What do I care? Bye, I'm sigining off with peace with you.

Peace will only exist if the issues of the people from all sides are taken into consideration that means mandate of the people is the supreme and should be supreme, Maobadis are not supreme nor are the SPAs. Is there anyone who cares for others then themselves? No-one! Why is the issue of a "secular" state now? Did anyone other than Maobadis asked for it? NO. Then why the heck they had to declare a secular state without considering its consequences? This could also be one of the Maobadi agenda to divide the people; make the SPAs weaker to come to power. Could be.. only time can tell..

It is sad Nepalese just don't care, they do not stand for anything. There are many things to be depressed about Nepal, in fact I'm these days. 1. Its not a matter of whether Nepal is called Hindu state or not. It was a matter of proud for me when "NEPAL WAS THE ONLY HINDU STATE IN THE WHOLE UNIVERSE" I could say that proudly too all the foreigner, but not any more. 2. Nepal used to be the PEACE LAND, that doesn't exist anymore. Thanks to Maoist 3. We were taught while in Nepal, birth place of Lord Buddha, nobody in western world believes that, they think its INDIA, all books, media says it India. 4. Nepalese Army used to be the bravest, not anymore, they couldn't even catch these coward Prachanda & Babu Ram for years, at least, we wouldn't have to see these days if they had catch and kill 'em years ago. Since Madhav Nepal said, anyone disagreeing with him will be left out, I'm waiting for the day if it ever comes, people will decide or get a chance to vote instead on whether to keep Nepal as a HINDU state.

kapil ji and ktmeye ji why in the world you guys are so worried about nepal not being hindu nation anymore. with given time and situation, what good has it done to our people by being a hindu nation? nothing at all. besides who in the world gives sh**t about if nepal is hindu nation. all we care about is whats good for nation in the given time and situation. and you should remember the fact this decision wasnt just remember, it has been there for long time in communist agenda to make the nation secular state. maoist want it that way or even madhav wants it that way. so to come up with some kind of compromise something has to be given. its just the name attached to our country. declaring nepal as secular state doesnt change the fact that majority of ppl in nepal are hindu and we are free to practice our religion and our tradition. instead of worrying about what is labelled to our nation, worry about following your own hindu tradition . stop eating beef, dont be reluctant to tika and go for shopping. i have seen so many nepali folks dont keep up with hindu tradition , yet we see so much B.S about government decision to make it secular country. it is good , indeed very good . being non hindu nation , we dont need Vishnus (gyane other in line) to rule the nation. think about it.. think hard.... whats in the name when you are free to practice anything you like. being proud among foreigners ..lets think about other ways .. let me list some. how about saying 99 percent of our population are literate. how about saying it is very safe to visit our beautiful country how about it is saying it is worth returning back and still be able to make a decent living there how about saying our gdp is growing 5-6 percent a year. how about making nepal advance in technology. how about having programms to make our youth employed and busy so that noone has time for protest. these things are something that will make us proud to be nepali. jai nepal

To all the people who are against Nepal being a secular state, would you like it if Nepal is declared a Buddhist state ? No ! neither would you like it if America were to be declared a Christian state tomorrow. Infact you would be the first to protest such a move. You will create a huge hullabaloo against this undemocratic move. You will protest and argue putting forth points like equality, freedom and separation of church and state. I am appalled to see the hypocrisy and selfishness in these people. They are not happy about this wonderful transition that our nation is going through but solely concerned about Nepal no more being a Hindu nation. As Karmapa and deja blue stated, the label of Hindu nation never benifited anyone other then the select few in Nepal and India. To the majority of Nepales, oppressed for years and forgotten by the ruling elites in Kathmandu the concept of a Hindu nation does no benifit. People need education, employment and heath-care. They ned security, they need to be convinced that whenever someone steps out of the house, they will be back. This is an oppurtunity for us to make a step in the right direction. Let us not be constrained by this issue of state religion, as it does no justice to the rest of the mass. Hindu religion with its principles and consistancy will still remain a majority and would still be a deciding factors in all laws or articles tabled in the parliament. Hinduism is not going to disappear, it hasn't in India after the hundreds of years of rule of the Mughals and british, definately not under a secular Nepal.

I agree with KTMEYE...i feel the same way. I just wish we could do something about it...I dont see the difference being a secular country or a hindu country....even when Nepal was a hindu country everything was alright...it was not like we ever had problems about religion...nobody ever fought about their religion....so i dont understand wut's the point of changing nepal into secular country.....wut difference is it gona make???...I used to feel proud to tell people tht Nepal is the only Hindu coutry in the world...but i guess i m not gona have that chance anymore...Well this is just my opinion, it's not like i understand politics or anything...i was just trying to tell ppl how i felt abt the situation with a little bit of knowledge that i have

@enigma. >>> to all the people who are against Nepal being a secular state, would you like it if Nepal is declared a Buddhist state ? That is really stupid question. Nepal does not figure out on this list for buddhist population. But it does in similar list for hinduism. http://www.buddhanet.net/e-learning/history/bstatt10.htm Would you ask these countries to be named hindu country or secular? Buddhist Countries Countries which recognize Buddhism as their official religion: * Bhutan (Drukpa Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism) * Cambodia (Theravada Buddhism) * Kalmykia, a republic within the Russian Federation (Tibetan Buddhism - sole Buddhist entity in Europe) * Thailand (Theravada Buddhism) * Tibet Government in Exile (Gelugpa school of Tibetan Buddhism) BTW, UK also has official religion... but is considered champion in democracy and human rights. Anglican Jurisdictions which recognise an Anglican church as their state religion: * England (as part of the greater United Kingdom) - Church of England from : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_religion#Christian_countries Also look what it says about hindu religion..... Hindu Countries There are no countries that explicitly recognise Hinduism as their official religion. In the Constitution of Nepal, however, the country was referred to as the "Hindu Kingdom", even though Hinduism was not mentioned as the state religion. As of May 2006, Nepal was officially declared a secular state.
