i am fed up dealing with nepalese, fed up with them taking me for granted. want to do something good, and then khutta taana tan. no responsibility, just play. thats what I have noticed with MAJORITY of nepalese i have met. They try to act all cool like they dont give a sh!t. I love my country and my culture but I am starting to feel irritated by my own people. I compare us with other countrymen and sometimes feel we are soooo far behind.

I am not stereotyping this to ALL nepalese, but majority of us. when will we ever learn?

Sleepyspur, I'm fine with our population growth. Here is one fine example of these lucky ones. I happen to take one family to get their SS number to a local SS office. The appointment was for 9:30 A.M. There were good 15 -20 people waiting for their turn but my good relative ask me around 9:40 "The Uncle" says, don't you know anyone here to expedite our case; you lived here for very long time. Upon finding out I've no "Connection" that i have or desire, he got up from his chair and went up to the window just to get a stern warning "Sir, you have to wait". Now that is just a small incident and one family.

Well, can you blame them for it? It takes time to adjust to a new country. The difference between Nepal and US is quite vast. It might sound funny, but I am not surprised. I mean, you can joke about how that is very "pakhay" and laugh... but I dont think you can really hold it against them.

While the thread is titled rather provocatively, some might say offensively, if you scratch beneath the surface, it does bring up deep seated feelings that many of us are currently going through or have been through in the past. As long as people can participate in this discussion in a sensible manner, something valuable might just come out of it, IMHO :)

I agree with those who say there are better reasons to help someone in need other than the fact they happen to be of the same nationality or caste or ethnic group as you. I personally find it rather disconcerting when I hear people express generalized feelings for an entire group of people ("I feel for Nepalese" or " I feel for my caste" or "I hate Indians" or "I hate Americans").

Besides being irrational, such thoughts could be self damaging too as they can lead to a ghettoed mindset where you see the entire world through the prism of race, caste and ethnicity. The person standing in front of you is not just another person but he or she is the "Indian" restaurant owner or your "American" friend or your "Nepali" cousin. Such sentiments can then used to justify anything - including excesses or a sense of victimization - in the name of your identity - whether that identity be based on nationality, caste, ethnicity, class or all of the above.

To me the key to dealing with such an issue is to stop generalizing and start treating each case of bad behavior as an individual (rather than collective action) which is what it such things really are. Not unless you develop such a capability will you be able to fight prejudice in your own mind.

The last post u made is pretty neat, and it can be very good tips for new comers. I knew about not coming out of car and not putting hands inside pocket when stopped by cops, and not telling 'sorry' when involved in car accidents. I think u should start a new thread with that post.

I am sorry, but it is very hard to understand GP. I am sure he has good heart and is sharing useful information, but as I said, it is very hard to understand his writing. Perhaps, GP should write in Nepali, or at least, Roman Nepali forthe sake of good communication.
