I am returning to Nepal in a few months after spending four years in the US and completing my undergraduate degree. I don't know what I am gonna do back home. I don't even know if I can find a job in Nepal with an undergraduate degree in economics but I know that if I stay here and do my masters I will stay here forever. So I need to go back right now. I need some help from you guys

1) What is the cheapest way to get back to Nepal--- Googling for a few hours let me to believe that the cheapest way to get back would be to fly to Mumbia from San Franciso via Shanghai (Jet airways. Cost $683) and then take bus/train from there. Is there a cheaper way? If anyone has gone through this route before do you have any suggestions/things I should know?

2) What are some things that I should do (if any) before going back?

I wouldnot suggest you to make the same mistake that I made years before. I returned back to Nepal after my Bachelors. Didnot even use my OPT. After a year of frustration, I returned back for Masters. I was lucky that I got visa for second time, even the consular told me she had never seen anyone who returned back after bachelors and applied for F1 visa again for masters. Anyway long story short ...... even the employers there won't trust you, they think we come to work in nepal just for experience. On top of that wait few years see how maoists will do their homeworks ...... if u think u can survive return otherwise stay here.

Even if you catch a good project there you will get  $400-500  month for your degree. Which just enough to survive in kathmandu if you want to maintain good living standard.

To get such a job - may be you need to have hard exercise.....for sure you will enjoy social life there....Nepal has not yet entered in phase of political stability...who knows what will happen tomarrow.....good luck...

I dont know why everyone is suggesting him/her not to go.  if he/she has decided to go back and serve our country, this is really good news.  I am not sure what would be your contribution, but it will definitely have one if you work hard.  I would suggest you to go back and gain some experience, come back again for higher degree and go back again if you are really want to make some difference in the country.  Nepal definitely need good people and hope you will do well over there.  I am one of those people who did nt find a job in nepal and came here for higher degree and now working here.  Please do not assume that it would be easy in nepal, no it would nt be.  however, hard work does pay off.  you are still very young, you can give it a shot and if you think its not gonna work for you, you can always come back.  I dont think visa would be such a big deal like someone mentioned that he/she was lucky enough to get it 2nd time.  getting first time can be considered lucky but getting 2nd time for those people who has completed education and went back and agian wants to go for further study, visa should nt be a big deal.

Agent, going home is never a bad idea though very few people in your situation (having just completed undergraduate education in US) do it. I don't think you would make a decision based on the advices you receive from this forum, you must have done your independent research to come to this conclusion. I admire you but people in Nepal will give you a weired look for going back and you should be ready to overcome all that. Also frustration will rule you for some time.
I don't know your financial situation or any other factors influencing your decision but given the situation in Nepal and considering you are still young, I would consider doing masters, work for sometime to make some money and then go back and do what you like to in Nepal. Again, you should make the decision based on your situation but if you do decide to go, go with your head high and proud for doing what you are doing.

To the simple-minded fools you will look like a loser who couldn't pocket a green card. Few will have sincere respect and even fewer will be willing to hire you without connections. I am not trying to preach, but do your thing and stand out. Someone needs to take the initiative to fix the mess back home. My respect to you and Good luck!

agent, keep your expectations very low in nepal. I don't want to discourage you- if you are unsure then see it for yourself. you cannot generalize cause everyone is different and just because it didn't work out for one  doesn't mean it won't for another. after i graduated, i didn't use my opt and went straight to nepal. I worked there for 3 1/2 years. It was tough. the outdated, power-hungry old men who rule nepal will have issues with young america-returned people who are not afraid to express his/her disapproval or feed new ideas. one thing is for sure - back home they respect nepalis living abroad more than those who return. they think that those who return are ones who couldn't get GC or a good job. now i am back here and done with my masters. though i want to return to nepal (again), it is harder now. again, see it for yourself - it might be different for you.

I would suggest to do your master in us and return to nepal. Reasons

1) You can always return back if you want. There is nothing like I will stay here forever if I stay here any longer.
2) With undergrad degree, you will be consider in the same ranking as somebody from nepal with undergrad or master degree from TU who didn't study anything and was sunbathing and road blocking in his whole study period.
3) With masters, you would have an edge and can get jobs in ingo's. With bachelor it would be difficult.
4) With undergrad only in economics, you will be jobless and have to return to us after a short while.

If you ever return to Nepal, be prepared to answer this question the moment you get home: Aba kahile jaane ni uta?

If you really wish to go back atleast complete your masters. coz to get good job you will have to do your masters first. demand is very less as compared to supply therefore its tough. it will not take long to do your masters so go for it.

If you go back to Nepal, never ever try to find job. Start your own business right away. The hot sectors to focus right now are: solar/wind power OR agriculture. Don't concentrate yourself on KTM. First, go and have look at how people perform these kind of business in US. You will be amazed how wealthy you'd become in few years.

The reverse cycle of braindrain in a developing economy can be an asset to the nation.We can cite examples of India,China ,Ireland etc.

If you are planning to do a business ,I can give you an idea.You would be doing yourself as well as millions of people a favor if you could build paid restrooms all over the country.That situation is awful in Asia.

Try to get a job in Banking sector. Standard Chartered or Nabil have openings once a year and they take GRE type examinations to hire people, but once you get in, you are set, you will be able to work in the best environments and also get real work experience. You can then take leave of absense from your office to come and do your masters in US later and return to a better paying job. You won't believe but banking sector pays really high in Nepal and their bonus is in lakhs each year, so buddy all the best!.

Stay here, we like you.  If you decide to return, take all your immigration information.  Take transcripts and a copy of course content you studied, take information about your university as you will be asked by a thousand guys what American schools are like.   Take a good cheap pair of sunglasses. Take a copy of your degree, take reciepts, take photos of your friends made here, take addresses, emails addresses. Take a good pair of walking shoes or boots, take a digital camera with card, take some money but money in US banks pays better interest rate.  You can withdraw from KTM. Take a bullet proof vest.  Money makes the best gift in Nepal, as most goods are available there to buy. 

Why not apply to do master's degree here?

Plan on some sort of entrepreneurship (anything, literally anything), no matter how small it is to start with.

1) If you are interested in IT sector, there are many things you can achieve in Nepal (which perhaps are difficult in the US for an immigrant). You don't have to be an IT/Computer Science/Eng. major yourself, but if you can make a team of two/three(from IT field), it would be better for you to begin with. They will handle the technical side, while you take care of the management/financial side.

2) If I were you, I would do a thorough research on the viability (cost-benefit and all) of Fast Food Joints in Nepal. There ain't many, are they? Not even McDonald's. No pizza stores too (as far as I can recall). At least no big brand names yet. There are quite a few in India though: Mc Donald's, Dominos and the likes. Contact them. See how you can establish a franchise or two in Nepal (in Kathmandu/Pokhara or other major cities). Don't worry about investments. There are banks and many finance companies to help you financially in the beginning.

3) Another idea could be Day Care Centers/Preschools. Again, not many out there I believe. Even if there already are, not many good ones for sure. Preschools in the US are excellent. Do some research on how they work. Life has changed in KTM. With both parents working, kids need custodians to be looked after.

As I said, anything that has some potential in the market.

If you are thinking of working for others, there won't be much incentive/perk for you. It will only lead to a disappointment/frustration in the long run. So, better be prepared to take some risk than repent later.
