Why do doctors wear white and lawyers black coat? Why not other colours?

Black often stands for secrecy, and no doubt lawyers have plenty of those. (thats why black)
White often stands for a rescuer and also good luck , which is needed for the docs. (thats why white)

doctors .. good faith.. always do best to save patients... no bad thought... clear conscience thus "WHITE"

lawyers.. how to cheat the other guy. manipulate jury... so its in nature.. manipulate client... conscience is "BLACK AND MARRED" hence "BLACK"

White is to mourn the death of someone, at least in the Hindu society. Doctors mourn all the time, coz they know that the only people they get to see is the sick ones.

Black is the orginator. Before anything exists, it is indeed black. The more the "black matter" you have, the more creative you are. Lawyers are expected to be creative--to make their points.

Doctors need to know if their patients are bleeding and blood is very distinct on white clothes. Whereas on a black coat it's hard to see the blood.

we all know that without doctors the life expantancy would still be in the mid-30s so they have saved waay more lives then they have accedentally killed.
The majority of ppl do not go to the doctor until they are sicker than they would have been if they did not put off going to the doctor. Not to mention the bad habits people have that affect thier health like...smoking, drinking, over eating and bla bla

GUEST4 ji! I don't think doctors really kill ppl. They try their best to save life but they r not god. All they can do it try their best. Rose sis is right about color thing

I don't know the answer to the question. However, lawyers in the US don't necessarily wear the black outfit as they do in Nepal and India. At the same time the doctors here, I've seen them with green outfit as well..

My statement was just to counterpose what meera said (doctors heal while lawyers kill).

Although I did not get the fact from any credible source, I do believe that the doctors kill more people than lawyers do. However, it does not mean that they do not save people: they do. I have a lot of respect for the profession.

May be because Docs. are suppose to be transperant and lawyers are not.

Doctors wear white coats to keep clean. It is easy to see dirty, infectious, dangerous stuff on white, be it chemicals, dirt, blood, or other bodily fluids.

Lawyers wear black to keep the formality of the court. Black (or dark clothing) has been traditionally associated with formal occasions, be it parties, funerals, interviews, etc.

What about research scientist in chem/biochem.......... lab ?
they do wear white coat too ??
