The landslide victory obtained by the Maoist in the April 2008 General Election shows the groundswell of support for them from the denizens of Nepal. Maoist and its kingpin Prachanda are all basking in the glory of their victory. Well candidly speaking the results of the election caught everyone on the wrong foot including Maoist themselves. Everyone, including the writer himself believed that Maoist will achieve distant third in the general election after NC(Nepali Congress) and UML(Unified Marxist Leninist). The major international print media reported that the election was held in a “general atmosphere of fear and intimidation”. That might be true for remote areas and bastions of Maoist but what about cities and especially in Kathmandu where Maoist managed to pull off numerous seats. The ignominious defeat of the chief of UML, Madhav Kumar Nepal clearly explains the verdict of the common Nepalese people who were fed up with the feudal bureaucratic system, centralization of power in Kathmandu and hollow promises by venal politicians. They desired amendment in current political establishment and Maoist were the only hope for them.

For Maoist, triumphing in the election was the easier task but now it is clear that they will lead a coalition government until the new constitution is drafted hence the onerous journey for them begins. Maoist have asserted everyone including the International Community about there cause for democracy and their responsibility to develop a congenial atmosphere. Maoist have already expressed their eagerness to form a coalition government comprising all the parties. And the various parties in turn should support Maoist by participating in the government. This is one of the most important period for Nepal when it is being transformed from a Constitutional Monarchy to a Republic. Its a period of test of the perseverance of the various parties to their cause to a democratic and prosperous Nepal. The coalition government thus formed should decide the future of the monarch. The government should refrain itself from any kind of heavy handed approach and an amicable agreement should be reached between the monarch and the government. It has yet not been clear who will be the PM in Nepal but for the writer Dr Baburam Bhattarai will be the person to go with because of the veneration he receives from Nepali populace. But as perceived Prachanda seems to be the one who will lead Nepal. Prachanda has already expressed his keenness to visit India which certainly forebodes well for the bonhomie between Maoist and Indian Government. Prachanda must eliminate any reservation that the Indian Government has and must able to ascertain that Maoist are no longer an armed extremist but a full fledged political party with liberal agenda. Indian government is particularly worried as Maoist in power, they will loose there hegemony to Chinese, as Maoist are believed to be more inclined to Chinese government. Recent brutal crackdown of the Pro-Tibetan activists by the Nepalese government to please Chinese government can be taken as an precursor for things to come. But Maoist should restrain themselves for becoming loyal to any one of its neighbor. Its better for Nepal that it maintains a good rapport with both of its neighbor and move forward to social and economic prosperity. Maoist should demand that the USA scrap the terrorist tag put on them and both India and China should help them in this regard.

Maoist should now “Walk the talk”. Maoist should adopt a prudent and pragmatic approach to governance. This is the period of history in Nepal where the resilience of Maoist will be tested and only if Maoist are able to prove themselves, that they can assert the International Community that a radical group when provided a proper platform can deliver. The future policies followed by Maoist will vindicate their election victory and thats completely in hand of Prachanda and his clique.
