In a reference to an interest by an oil company in exploration in Nepal, The Scotsman online reports that,

.........The Nepal site is equivalent in size to almost 150 North Sea blocks and covers an area roughly five times bigger than its Rajasthan field in India. Negotiations are ongoing with the Nepalese authorities. Analysts said drilling could begin within the next year to 18 months.........

Is it true?

If indeed oil is found in Nepal, I wonder how much of the money it generates will trickle down to the nation's development. I am sure royalties, politicians and bureaucrats are salivating to line their pockets.

Just my cynical self.

Exporting raw energy does not necessarily benefit the larger population. Look at Nigeria!

BUT, with well thought out institutional structures and agreements with oil companies... it COULD be turned into an income source that benefits Nepali janata.

The same goes for export oriented hydropower development as well...

Hmm, mickthesick, we came to know about Nepali Oil from George Bush rather than King G.

Aja Bhanda Barsa Din Pahile GB already send his chamchas' (Jim Baker) to flex their muscle regarding letting American companies explore the Oil.

What do you think Americans are interested in Nepal suddenly? They don't tears on Khadka's death. They are concerned about three important factors one Nepal should be not be another Afganistan for Al Quaida type, second they can keep good watch about China (and may be India_ from Nepal and lastly Nepal's Oil potential.
