Sen. Feinstein Says Won't Run in California Recall

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California said on Wednesday she would not step in as an alternate candidate should current Democratic Gov. Gray Davis lose office in the state's recall ballot in October.

A number of Democrats had called on Feinstein, 70, to run to bar Republicans from taking over the statehouse of the nation's richest and most populous state. The party could field an alternative candidate on the ballot's second question, which allows voters to name a successor should the recall succeed.

"After thinking a great deal about this recall, its implications for the future, and its misguided nature, I have decided that I will not place my name on the ballot," Feinstein said in a statement.

The two-part ballot on Oct. 7 will ask whether voters want to remove Davis from office and list candidates to replace him should the recall succeed.

The deadline for candidates to put their names on the recall ballot is Saturday. So far, more than 300 people have expressed interest in running.

"Sadly, the state is ... going to be engaged in an election that is becoming more and more like a carnival every day," Feinstein said. "With a decade of experience in the U.S. Senate, I believe I can be most helpful to California as its senior senator."

On Wednesday, Republican actor Arnold Schwarzenegger was expected to announce his intentions, although he was not expected to enter the race.
